Program Director / Coach
This is Chelsea Julian’s first year coaching MSU Pompon. Chelsea has been actively involved in the sport of pompon for 17 years. She began her pom career as a 6th grader with the Howell Pompon Program, and quickly stood out as a strong leader and choreographer. As a 4-year member of Howell Varsity Pompon, she played a role in establishing Howell as a leading Mid American Pompon program. Chelsea was a 3-year captain, 3-year Mid American All Star, and Mid American Pompon Sparkle and Shine award recipient. During high school, Chelsea was an avid youth coach who helped organize and lead numerous pompon clinics, fundraisers and service projects. Upon graduating from Howell High School in 2010, Chelsea was selected as a member of the 2010-2011 Michigan State University Pompon Team. She was also selected as a member of the Mid American Pompon Staff, where she was able to spend 4 years mentoring young women on high school and middle school pompon teams from across Michigan. After transferring to Grand Valley State University, Chelsea joined GVSU Pompon in 2014 and graduated with her Masters in Social Work in 2017. She began coaching Howell Varsity Pompon in 2018, and led her team to achieve great success, including 2018 High Kick Champions and 2020 Pompon Class A State Runners Up. Chelsea currently resides in the Lansing area with her dog, Lola, and works as a Recruitment Specialist for Peckham, Inc, a large non-profit vocational rehabilitation organization based in Mid-Michigan.
This is Ashlyn Kelly’s first season on the MSU Pompon Coaching Staff. Ashlyn has been involved with the sport of pompon for the past 8 years. She began her pompon career at Divine Child High School, where she was a 4-year team member. Ashlyn was a 4-year Mid American Pompon All Star and the recipient of the Mid American Smile Sparkle Shine Award her senior year. In addition to pompon, Ashlyn danced competitively in all styles for 15 years at Noretta Dunworth School of Dance. After graduating from high school in 2016, Ashlyn was selected as a member of the Mid American Pompon Staff, where she worked as a summer camp instructor for 4 years and coordinator of the All Star Team for 3 years. Upon entering her freshman year of college, Ashlyn was selected as a member of the Michigan State University Pompon Team, where she served as an Co-Assistant Captain her junior year and Co-Captain her senior year. Ashlyn will be graduating in May with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from MSU, with the hopes of attending graduate school for Physical Therapy in the future. Upon graduation in May, she will be moving home to the Metro-Detroit area to work at a Physical Therapy clinic and gain additional experience in her field before attending graduate school.
This is Gabbi O’Connell’s first season on the MSU Pompon Coaching Staff. Gabbi has been involved in pompon for over 8 years. She started her pom career with South Lyon Pompon where she was on varsity for 4 years and served as a team captain her senior year. In addition, Gabbi was also selected as a Mid American Pompon All Star for her senior year. After Gabbi graduated high school in 2014, she was selected as a member of the Michigan State University Pompon team. During her sophomore year, Gabbi served as the team’s Private Team Clinic Coordinator, helping to facilitate clinics and workshops to strengthen the high kick and pompon skills of middle school and high school teams. In her junior year, Gabbi was appointed Co-Assistant Captain and later Co-Captain her senior year. Gabbi graduated from Michigan State University in 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science and a minor in Pharmacology and Toxicology. She currently lives in Ann Arbor where she works at Big Brothers Big Sisters as Partnership Coordinator, and volunteers in various positions with Camp Kesem, a non-profit organization.
This is Melissa Finneran’s first season on the MSU Pompon Coaching Staff. Melissa has been involved in the sport of pompon for 8 years. She started her pom career at South Lyon High School where she was a 4-year team member, served as a Captain her senior year, and was nominated MVP both junior and senior year on SLVP. Melissa was a 2-year Mid American Pompon All Star and a Mid American Pompon scholarship recipient in 2016. In addition, Melissa danced competitively in a variety of disciplines for over 10 years at American Dance Academy. After graduating high school in 2016, Melissa was selected as a member of Michigan State University Pompon team. Her sophomore year, Melissa was named Big/Little Sister Coordinator for the team, where she served as a mentor for the incoming freshmen class. Her junior year, Melissa was named Co-Assistant Captain and continued on as Co-Captain her senior year. This May, Melissa will graduate from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Engineering with a concentration in Technical Sales. She plans to move back to Metro-Detroit to work full-time as a Sales Engineer.
